Google+ has been around for about 3 months now but in field trial mode, which meant that you needed an invitation to join. But now it’s entered its beta stages and everyone can sing up for the social network project just by going to the web page of the service with no invitations required.

Google+ is still in toddler times and Google shares that there’s still a long way to go and much to accomplish, but the search giant hasn’t been wasting its time – there are now over 100 improvements and features.

Concerning mobile the iOS and Android (especially) mobile Google+ apps already have most of the prominent features of Google+. Hangouts is a video-conferencing feature of Google+ that’s already available on Android (Gingerbread required) and is coming soon to iOS. Mentioning a Google+ member is easy and you can do it in a conversation with another person or a post just by doing a “+[name]” command. iOS users can now also +1 individual comments much like the “Like” function on Facebook – this functions will arrive for Android users soon.

The Google+ app can now also be moved on to the SD storage to spare phone memory for apps and other stuff. There’s also a customizable notifications option to select what you want to be notified about and what not.

On Android the “Huddle” feature has been renamed to “Messenger”, something that should also happen on iOS with the next app update.

Finally, Google+ now has opened its sign up. You no longer need an invitation to join Google+ – you can now just go to its webpage and get going. Signing up also works from the mobile apps.

 The Nokia Lumia 920 features optical image stabilization (OIS) for its 8MP camera and while Nokia dropped the ball when it was discovered its promo video was not shot with the 920 at all, fans took it on themselves to reshoot the sample. But riding a bike is too mellow, driving a four by four through the desert puts lot more stress on the OIS and is much cooler too.

UK Mobile Review has a series of posts on how its team did the test, culminating in a 8 minute long video of them driving across sand dunes in the desert near Dubai.

You can read about how they came up with the idea, what protection they used (against the sand), how they hooked the Nokia Lumia 920 up to the grill of a Toyota truck and floored it.

 Microsoft has launched the new Outlook.com, which replaces the existing Hotmail webmail service. The new website makes good use of the Metro UI and also offers users to switch from their current @hotmail.com email addresses to @outlook.com addresses.

Upon opening the new website you’ll notice just how clean and uncluttered the UI is. In fact, it’s so minimalistic that at first glance you’d think you accidentally opened the mobile version of the website.

On the left you have your usual folder list including items such as Inbox, Junk, Drafts, etc. You can right-click on these to access additional options, such as marking all mails as read or creating a new folder.

On the top you have the Outlook logo with a drop-down menu that lets you switch to your contacts, calendar or SkyDrive account. Weirdly, though, only the Contacts page uses the new Metro UI, whereas the Calendar and SkyDrive app use the same old Hotmail style UI. Worse still, once you switch over to these services, there is no toggle option on the top so you can’t quickly switch back to Outlook. It feels like you have opened a whole new service from a different provider altogether, which is jarring.

Coming back to the Mail app, you will find the option to create a new mail on top. Clicking it opens a two pane window, with the ‘To’ on the left and the mail editor on the right.

Going back to the top bar, you will find a button to launch the messenger on the right, next to a settings button and your profile button. The messenger service not only lets you send messages to people using Windows Live, but much like the messaging app in Windows 8, it also lets you to chat with people on Facebook. Microsoft is also going to integrate Skype in future so you can communicate with your Skype friends as well. Sweet!

The Contacts section shows you your Hotmail contacts but you can also add contacts from other services such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google. The contacts appear in a pane on the left and their information on the right once you click on them. Marking multiple contacts makes them appear as tiles on the right. You will have to do this in order to manage your contacts as you can’t right-click on them individually for some reason.

There is also a new mobile version of the site that you can access from your iOS or Android smartphones. For some reason, the same site loads on the iPad as well, even though the full desktop version would work great om most tablets.

Another interesting feature is that you can now pick up to five different email aliases to use with your standard email. Once you set up any extra aliases, you will be able to use them to send and receive email right from your regular email inbox.

Overall, the Outlook.com is a solid update to the well-known Hotmail service. It looks fresh and approachable and something you’d want to use on a daily basis. It would be tough for Microsoft to pull people away from Gmail, which has served everyone well over the years. Still, initial numbers suggest that Microsoft seems to be doing pretty well, with over a million new users signing up in just a few hours of the service going live. Yet, it remains to be seen how many of these are just going to try it out for a while and never go back and how many will stick around. For old Hotmail users, though, who have stuck around with the service for all these years, there are now fewer reasons to switch over to something like Gmail.

 Google has updated their maps platform to include higher-detailed satellite imagery, as well as a new 45° view mode.

It has covered 51 cities initially, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the State Capitol building in Austin, Texas.

Of the 51 cities, 37 are scattered across the US, so be sure to check out some great American landmarks.

While 45° view is not a novelty for online maps (Bing Maps have had Bird’s Eye mode for quite a while), it seems that Google is trying to get in a few punches against the competition, in light of Apple’s recent maps debacle.

 Dropbox has announced a new program called the Space Race meant for school and university students where you can earn up to 25GB for yourself and your schoolmates while competing against other schools in the program.

To be part of this program, you have to be from one of the eligible educational institutions and have their official email address. Once you create an account with this ID, you automatically get 3GB of space by default for two years. If you already have an account or want to register with some other email address you can but you still have to confirm your school ID with them.

Every time a student from your institution creates an account this way it gets 1 point. If you go through the Get Started page, your institution gets 2 points. If you refer someone, you get 500MB for free. The more points your institution earns, the more storage each of the registered members can get, up to 25GB in total for two years.

The program lasts for eight weeks and you can try to get as many points as you can by the end of it and see which of the institutions in the end got the most points.

 Back in the day when Gmail was introduced, Google redefined the concept of email storage. Today, the wildly popular email service broke more new ground by integrating Google Drive into it. The trick will allow you to email files up to 10GB in size.

Gmail attachments from Google Drive will always be kept in sync, so recipients will have access to the most recent version of a document or project. Naturally, Google will allow you to set permissions for editing of the documents you are sharing – some recipients can have access to a read-only version of the documents.

Gmail’s latest feature should gradually become available over the next few days in the refreshed message composer window. There is no information on its availability across mobile platforms yet.

 It might be six years old and have a replacement lurking right around the corner, but numbers say that the Xbox 360 is still one hell of a gaming console. Microsoft announced that it sold 750,000 units thanks to the shopping frenzy surrounding the Black Friday week.

The above number handily trumps the achievements of some of Microsoft’s major competitors, including Nintendo’s spanking new Wii U, which was plagued by stock shortages during the same period.

The success of the Xbox 360 was likely aided by the launch of this year’s top blockbuster video game titles such as Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and Assassin’s Creed III. In any case, the strong sales performance of the console will likely help it retain the best-selling status which it’s been holding to over the past couple of years.

 NetAplications has made a chart comparing browser hits by platform covering the last two years shows that Android has caught on with the iPhone but that the iPad is still dominating the mobile traffic.

Also, according to IBM, iOS devices accounted for 18.5% of all online transactions this Black Friday, compared to just 5.5% for Android.

The analyzed data also revealed some interesting results about the Android version distribution in the past two years. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still dominating, ICS is catching up, while older versions of the OS are noticeably fading away.

 Exactly a month ago HTC launched the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for the One X in Asia and now the update is available for CID_038 or CID_044 versions of the device around the world, too.

The update is 364MB in size and requires users to download а precursory 1.6MB file, bringing the software to version 3.14.707.24. Afterwards, the regular Android 4.1.1 update process will commence.

As seen in the screenshot provided by AndroidAuthority, the software bump brings HTC Sense 4+, new landing page in the gallery as well as improved battery management. The HTC One X owners bound to a carrier contract will have to wait probably to the beginning of next year to get the 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update. Bummer, we know.

The mid-range HTC One S is still waiting for its software update to Jelly Bean, and the company is still mum on details. We do hope it gets pushed before the end of the year, though.
